Court Delays El-Rufai's Bail Decision Following Judge's Personal Loss
The Kaduna State High Court has officially rescheduled its ruling on the bail application submitted by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the high-profile case initiated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Originally set for April 14, 2026, the decision has now been moved to April 21, 2026, due to unforeseen personal circumstances affecting the presiding judge.
Legal Proceedings and Adjournment Details
During a brief court session that lasted less than thirty minutes, El-Rufai appeared before the court, escorted by ICPC operatives in a white Hilux vehicle. He is currently standing trial on a nine-count amended charge that includes serious allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and corruption. Following the session, defence counsel Ubong Akpan addressed journalists, explaining that the adjournment was necessitated by the judge's bereavement, which prevented the completion of the ruling.
"His lordship was bereaved and unable to finalize the ruling. We understand such situations arise, and the motion for bail has been adjourned to Tuesday, April 21, 2026," Akpan stated. He confirmed that the ruling will be delivered on the new date, emphasizing the court's commitment to due process amidst the delay.
Defence Reaction and Broader Legal Strategy
Akpan also commented on the prosecution's approach, suggesting that the ICPC might be expanding the case across multiple jurisdictions. "We are heading to the federal court as stage two, with the ICPC potentially charging us in phases. This could involve other agencies like Plant Quarantine, leading to charges in various courts," he remarked, highlighting the defence's anticipation of further legal battles. He added a note of sarcasm, saying, "Since everyone seems interested in El-Rufai's case, we might see charges from Customary or Native Courts too."
The matter remains scheduled for April 21, 2026, for the continuation of bail proceedings. Additionally, El-Rufai is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in a related sitting, indicating ongoing legal scrutiny across different judicial levels.
Background and Public Reaction
Previously, reports emerged regarding El-Rufai's temporary release from ICPC custody, with sources alleging it was granted on compassionate grounds. This development has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, reflecting public interest in the case's outcomes. The adjournment adds another layer to the unfolding legal drama, as stakeholders await the court's decision on bail amidst broader allegations of corruption and misconduct.
