Federal High Court Delivers Life Sentences to Four Boko Haram Terrorists in Abuja
In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has imposed life imprisonment sentences on four individuals convicted for their active participation in Boko Haram terrorist attacks across various parts of Borno State between the years 2021 and 2024. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment after the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them by the Federal Government, with evidence presented by a witness from the Department of State Services (DSS).
Details of the Convictions and Sentencing
The court proceedings, led by Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), alongside other legal representatives including Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) and the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, saw the prosecution tender confessional statements and investigation reports through the DSS witness. These documents were admitted as evidence and marked as exhibits, solidifying the case against the convicts.
The four terrorists sentenced to life imprisonment are identified as Ali Abiso, Bakura Abah Kabiru, Ado (also known as Luka Garba), and Babagoni Masawai. Justice Omotosho specified that Ali Abiso received life imprisonment in counts two and four, while being committed to 25 years in jail for each of counts one and three, totaling 50 years. However, the judge directed that the sentences in counts one and three must run concurrently.
Specific Charges and Legal Framework
In count four, Ali Abiso, a 30-year-old man from Bama Local Council of Borno State, was accused of aiding and participating in Boko Haram attacks in locations such as Bama, Gwoza, Konduga, Bita, Baza, and Aulari on or before July 8, 2022. This offence was deemed contrary to Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, highlighting the legal basis for the severe penalties imposed.
Similarly, Bakura Abah Kabiru, who actively engaged in the terror group's activities, was sentenced to life imprisonment in count two and given a 25-year jail term in each of counts one and three. Ado (a.k.a Luka Garba) received life imprisonment in count two and 25 years in count one, while Babagoni Masawai faced life sentences in counts six and seven, 20 years' imprisonment in counts one and two, and 10 years in each of counts three, four, and five.
Additional Convictions and Broader Implications
Beyond the four life sentences, Justice Omotosho also convicted and sentenced 14 other individuals to various jail terms, ranging from 20 to 25 years for each count filed against them. This comprehensive ruling underscores the judiciary's firm stance against terrorism and its commitment to upholding national security through rigorous legal processes.
The case serves as a significant milestone in Nigeria's ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and bring perpetrators of violent acts to justice, reinforcing the role of the courts in maintaining law and order in the face of security challenges.
