Gombe State High Court Imposes Death Penalty on Teenager for Homicide
A Gombe State High Court, specifically Court No. 2, has delivered a landmark judgment, sentencing an 18-year-old individual, Mustapha Isah, to death by hanging for the grave offence of culpable homicide. The convict, also known as Abbati, resided on Santana Street in the Jekadafari area of Gombe and was found guilty of causing the death of Aishatu Abdullahi, popularly referred to as Damori, who was 58 years old at the time of the incident.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Legal Proceedings
The victim, a mother of eight children, was tragically killed on Friday, October 20, 2023. According to court records, the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. when the convict unlawfully entered the residence of the deceased. During the attack, he used a knife to inflict fatal injuries on the victim, which ultimately led to her death. The suspect was apprehended alongside an accomplice just two days after the crime, leading to a thorough investigation and subsequent trial.
On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the presiding judge, Justice Abdulhamid-Mohammed Yakubu, delivered the judgment, emphasizing that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge stated that the evidence presented clearly demonstrated that the accused intentionally caused the death of the victim, thereby committing the offence of culpable homicide, which is punishable by death under the law.
Judge's Ruling and Emphasis on Legal Deterrence
In his ruling, Justice Yakubu highlighted the importance of upholding the sanctity of human life and ensuring that such heinous acts are met with the full force of the law. He remarked, "The evidence before this court clearly shows that the accused person committed the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death. The prosecution has successfully discharged the burden of proof placed upon it by law." Consequently, the judge sentenced Mustapha Isah to death by hanging, in strict accordance with the legal provisions.
Furthermore, Justice Yakubu noted that the nature of the offence was exceptionally grave and warranted a severe penalty to serve as a deterrent to others in society. He added, "The sanctity of human life must be protected. Any act that unlawfully takes life must be decisively dealt with in line with the law." This ruling underscores the judiciary's commitment to justice and the protection of citizens in Gombe State and beyond.
