A leading parliamentary pressure group, the Parliamentary Advocacy Network, has warmly welcomed the recent decision by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee to dismiss all allegations of professional misconduct against Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The group described the ruling as a significant victory for due process and professional integrity within Nigeria's legal and political systems.
Background of the Petition and LPDC Ruling
The petition, filed by a private legal practitioner, accused Deputy Speaker Kalu of violating professional rules by allegedly undergoing National Youth Service Corps duties and attending the Nigerian Law School simultaneously. However, the LPDC panel thoroughly examined the claims and concluded that no prima facie case was established. In its ruling, the committee stated there was no basis to invite or distract the Deputy Speaker over the matter, effectively clearing him of all allegations.
PAN's Reaction and Commendations
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its National Coordinator, Anderson Osiebe, the Parliamentary Advocacy Network commended the LPDC panel for its responsible and professional handling of the case. The group emphasized that the committee acted wisely by refusing to entertain what it termed a baseless petition aimed at distracting a dedicated lawmaker.
Osiebe stated, "The Panel deserves commendations for not indulging the traducers and blackmailers of the Deputy Speaker, whose ulterior motive was to distract a fine Lawmaker who is making Nigeria proud internationally." He added that the committee's conduct reflected patriotism and a strong respect for institutional standards, reinforcing confidence in Nigeria's disciplinary processes.
Concerns Over Political Attacks and Social Media Campaigns
The Parliamentary Advocacy Network expressed deep concern over what it described as a sustained attempt by certain political actors to tarnish the image of senior public officials through unfounded social media campaigns and petitions lacking substance. The group warned that such tactics undermine public trust and divert attention from meaningful governance and development efforts.
Warning to Abia-Based Groups
Specifically, PAN cautioned a group known as Abia Patriots and other entities promoting the allegations against Deputy Speaker Kalu to desist from what it labeled as blackmail and distraction. According to the statement, political stakeholders in Abia State should instead take pride in Kalu's position as the highest-ranking elected official from the South East region.
Osiebe highlighted that Deputy Speaker Kalu enjoys wide respect both within Nigeria and internationally for his legislative work and leadership profile. He described repeated attacks against Kalu as unnecessary and damaging, particularly when they originate from within his home state, Abia. The group alleged that Abia Patriots functions primarily as a political support platform with a pattern of promoting the state governor while attacking the Deputy Speaker.
