LND Condemns Jos Attacks, Calls for Probe into Alleged Foreign Involvement
The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has strongly condemned the ongoing violent attacks in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State, urging security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. The group described the killings as gruesome and called on security forces to act decisively by identifying those responsible and responding appropriately to curb further violence.
Investigation into American Citizen's Activities
In addition, LND urged security and immigration authorities to immediately investigate the activities of an American citizen, Alex Berbir, to determine whether he violated any Nigerian laws and to take necessary legal action if found culpable. The organisation stressed the need to safeguard Nigeria’s unity and stability against both internal saboteurs and alleged foreign interference, expressing concern over what it described as growing foreign interest in the persistent violence in parts of Northern Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ladan Salihu, the group raised concerns about Berbir’s alleged presence and activities in connection with the incident, suggesting he could be linked to the unrest. “For a foreigner to come and openly meddle in our internal affairs so brazenly reflects the troubling state of our country,” the statement read.
Questions Over Access and Actions
The group further questioned how the individual reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, calling on authorities to clarify when he entered Nigeria, how he gained access to the location so quickly, and the purpose of his visit, including the contents of a bag he was allegedly seen carrying. LND also expressed concern over video clips purportedly showing the same individual in Jos engaging in actions it described as inciting religious tension.
“More concerning are video clips of this individual previously seen in Jos allegedly provoking hostility by misrepresenting religious teachings. Such actions are dangerous and unacceptable, particularly in a fragile security environment,” the statement added.
Criticism of Online Remarks
The group further criticised what it described as unverified claims made online by the individual following the incident, warning that such remarks could inflame tensions and worsen the situation. LND maintained that Nigeria’s sovereignty and peace must not be undermined by any individual, whether local or foreign. “Incitement, misinformation, and provocative conduct must not be tolerated,” the group stated.
