Former Attorney-General Malami Declares No Regrets After Release from Custody
Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has publicly stated that he harbors no regrets concerning his actions during his time in office. This declaration comes shortly after his release from prison custody, where he was held on money laundering charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against him, his wife, and his son.
Malami Alleges Rights Violations by Security Agencies
In a recent interview following his release, Malami expressed his belief that his legal predicament is part of God's will, but he firmly vowed to defend himself against the allegations. He detailed his experiences, stating, "I have spent time in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and with the DSS. I believe it is all God's will and I accept it, but I will defend myself against the allegations." He further accused security agencies of violating his constitutional rights during the investigation process.
Malami emphasized, "They violated my rights by searching my houses and business premises without notifying me during the investigation. Constitutionally, I have the right to be present during a search to oversee the investigation of my property and to know exactly what is being looked for or taken." Despite these challenges, he reiterated, "I have no regrets regarding what I did during my time as a minister."
Gratitude and Call to Action for National Redemption
In a statement issued after his release, Malami extended his gratitude to well-meaning Nigerians who supported him through this difficult period. He said, "To friends and political associates within and outside Nigeria, I thank you for standing on the side of fairness, justice, and the rule of law. I remain resolute in my confidence that truth will prevail, justice will endure, and integrity will outlive every orchestrated distraction."
However, Malami also highlighted a greater responsibility beyond gratitude, asserting that the struggle for justice, accountability, and national redemption is only beginning. He warned, "Today, our country faces one of the gravest moments in its history. Our nation needs courageous voices, principled leadership, and citizens who refuse to surrender their future to despair or intimidation." He called on Nigerians to join him in rebuilding hope and defending the nation's dignity, concluding, "Let it be clearly understood that the struggle is just beginning, and together we must rise with courage, conviction, and faith to reclaim the promise of Nigeria."
