Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has firmly declared his intention to defend himself against allegations of money laundering, stating unequivocally that he harbors no regrets about his actions while in office. In a recent interview conducted in Hausa, Malami detailed his experiences, including time spent in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and with the Department of State Services, attributing these events to divine will but vowing to contest the charges.
Allegations of Rights Violations During Investigations
Malami emphasized that his constitutional rights were breached when security agencies conducted searches of his residences and business premises without prior notification or his presence. He argued that, as a citizen, he is entitled to oversee such investigations to ensure transparency and protect his property. "They violated my rights by searching my houses and business premises without notifying me during the investigation," Malami stated. "Constitutionally, I have the right to be present during a search to oversee the investigation of my property and to know exactly what is being looked for or taken."
Legal Battle and Family Involvement
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed a 16-count charge against Malami, his wife Bashir Asabe, and his son Abdulaziz, all centered on alleged money laundering activities. The family has entered pleas of not guilty, setting the stage for a protracted legal confrontation. Malami's resolve to fight these allegations underscores his belief in his innocence and his commitment to clearing his name in court.
Reflections on Ministerial Tenure and Personal Convictions
Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Malami expressed pride in his tenure as a minister, asserting that he acted in accordance with his duties and principles. "I have no regrets regarding what I did during my time as a minister," he affirmed, highlighting his acceptance of the situation as part of a larger divine plan. This stance reflects his unwavering confidence in his past actions and his determination to navigate the current allegations with a steadfast defense.
As the case progresses, Malami's statements signal a robust legal defense aimed at challenging both the procedural aspects of the investigation and the substantive charges. His emphasis on constitutional rights and personal integrity adds a layer of complexity to the proceedings, potentially influencing public perception and legal outcomes.
