Mohbad's Father Rejects Court's DNA Lab Proposal, Insists on Independent Paternity Test
Joseph Aloba, the father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has strongly opposed a suggestion from the Lagos State High Court in Ikorodu regarding the selection of a laboratory for a crucial DNA test. The test aims to determine the paternity of Liam, Mohbad's three-year-old son, but Mr. Aloba is demanding the right to conduct his own independent analysis to ensure accuracy and transparency.
Court's Initial Approval and Subsequent Objections
During a previous hearing, the court had approved a plan for Mr. Aloba, Wunmi (the mother of Liam), and the Lagos State government to each nominate a DNA testing center located abroad. This was intended to facilitate a fair and conclusive paternity examination. However, at a recent resumed hearing, Mr. Aloba and his legal team raised significant objections to the centers proposed by Wunmi and the state government.
The primary concern centered on the methodology of the DNA tests. According to Mr. Aloba's lawyer, the laboratories suggested by the other parties do not conduct tissue-based DNA testing. This type of test involves extracting tissue cells from the deceased singer's body and comparing them with samples from Liam. The lawyer argued that without this specific approach, the results could be inaccurate, potentially leading to a flawed determination of paternity.
Court's Compromise and Aloba's Conditional Agreement
In response to these objections, the court upheld Mr. Aloba's concerns and offered a new solution. The judge proposed that the court itself would provide a DNA testing center to carry out the examination, thereby setting aside all the previously nominated laboratories from Mr. Aloba, Wunmi, and the Lagos State Welfare Department. This move was seen as an attempt to streamline the process and avoid further disputes over lab selection.
Mr. Aloba has agreed to this court-offered compromise, but only under one strict condition: he must be allowed to personally select the center where the DNA test will be conducted. His lawyer emphasized that this demand stems from a desire for an independent verification, especially since Wunmi has already conducted a private DNA test. Mr. Aloba seeks a test that uses tissue cells from Mohbad's remains to ensure a definitive and reliable comparison with Liam's DNA, which he believes is essential for establishing true paternity.
Adjournment and Future Proceedings
The case has been adjourned until May 5, 2026, to allow time for Wunmi to consider whether she will consent to having samples taken from her son for the private DNA test that Mr. Aloba wishes to conduct. This next hearing will be critical in determining the path forward, as it hinges on Wunmi's agreement to participate in Mr. Aloba's proposed independent testing process.
The ongoing legal battle highlights the complexities and emotional tensions surrounding the paternity issue, with Mr. Aloba steadfast in his pursuit of what he views as a thorough and unbiased investigation into his grandson's lineage.
