NANS Condemns Maiduguri Bombings, Urges Federal Government to Prioritize Student Safety
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent suicide bomb attacks that struck Maiduguri, Borno State, resulting in tragic loss of innocent lives and numerous injuries. The coordinated explosions targeted key locations, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday market roundabout, and the post office area, with suspected terrorists believed to be responsible for the violence.
Call for Enhanced Security Measures
In a press release issued on Tuesday, NANS Zone E (North-East) coordinator, Comrade Mu’azu Hina, expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in addressing the persistent insecurity in the North-East region. Hina emphasized the urgent need to ensure the safety of students, particularly those enrolled in educational institutions within the area.
"If public places like the university teaching hospital can be targeted, it underscores the critical necessity to protect schools and institutions to safeguard the lives of innocent students," Hina stated. He urged security agencies to launch an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the attacks to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Advocacy for Preventive Measures
The students association advocated for strengthening intelligence gathering and increasing security presence in schools and other vulnerable areas to prevent future occurrences. NANS highlighted the importance of collective vigilance and timely reporting in combating terrorism.
"NANS also calls on Nigerian students nationwide to remain vigilant and security-conscious at all times. Students are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious movements, activities, or individuals to the appropriate security agencies," the release noted.
Hina further stressed that "collective vigilance and timely reporting are critical in preventing further acts of violence and safeguarding our communities. Terrorism in all its forms must be decisively confronted. The safety of Nigerian citizens, particularly students, must remain a top priority at all times."
The bombings have reignited concerns over security in the North-East, with NANS pushing for actionable steps to protect educational environments and ensure student welfare amidst ongoing threats.
