The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has issued a strong rebuttal against widespread social media allegations claiming that judges at a national conference sang a political song in allegiance to President Bola Tinubu. The institute has labeled the reports as entirely false and a dangerous attempt to undermine the judiciary's neutrality.
Setting the Record Straight on the 2025 Judges Conference
In an official statement released on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the NJI addressed what it called "misleading and inaccurate reports" circulating online. The controversy stemmed from the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference, which was held in Abuja on Monday and was declared open by President Bola Tinubu.
Mr. Kolade Umoru, the Head of Information, Media and Public Relations for the NJI, stated categorically that the claim judges engaged in the political chorus of "On Your Mandate We Shall Stand" is entirely false, unfounded, and does not reflect the events that transpired at the solemn ceremony.
What Actually Happened at the Event
The NJI clarified the sequence of events to dispel any misinformation. It confirmed that the only song collectively rendered by all participants, including the judges, was the National Anthem, which was played at both the commencement and conclusion of the opening ceremony.
The Institute explained that the brief rendition of the tune "On Your Mandate" was played solely by the Guards Brigade Band as part of their standard ceremonial protocol to usher the President to the podium for his address. The NJI emphasized that the Judiciary had no control over the musical selections of the Brigade, which operates under strict military ceremonial procedures.
Furthermore, the statement clarified that judges rose to their feet as the President walked to the podium, an act of due deference to the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and not an endorsement of any political allegiance.
Reaffirming Judicial Neutrality and a Call for Responsibility
In its statement, the NJI strongly reaffirmed the judiciary's commitment to remaining strictly non-partisan and deeply committed to constitutional neutrality. It described the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference as a statutory and professional gathering focused on strengthening the justice system and reinforcing public confidence.
The Institute expressed disappointment that the solemnity of the event was being distorted for political motives. It issued a firm call to action, urging members of the public and the media to exercise restraint, verify information, and avoid amplifying falsehoods that are capable of undermining the integrity of vital national institutions.
The NJI concluded by assuring the public that the Judiciary would continue to uphold its oath of office with dignity, independence, and unwavering fidelity to the Constitution.
