NYSC Corps Member Dies in Abeokuta, Staff Arrested as Investigation Launches
The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden death of a female corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a staff member taken into custody as security agencies investigate the tragic incident. Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations at the NYSC, confirmed the arrest and urged the public to allow due process while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The corps member, identified as Victoria Ariyo, reportedly died from complications linked to pregnancy on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. She was serving in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State at the time of her death. Sources indicate that the deceased had terminated the pregnancy and later developed severe complications that ultimately led to her passing. She was laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
This tragedy follows closely on the heels of another recent incident involving the death of a female corps member, Adeleye Mary, under unclear circumstances, highlighting ongoing concerns about the welfare of corps members nationwide.
Staff Involvement and Police Investigation
Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested Abass Olalekan, an NYSC official who served as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South. According to sources, Olalekan was allegedly sexually involved with the late corps member, prompting a thorough investigation by authorities. The NYSC has acknowledged media reports suggesting possible staff involvement and confirmed that the matter is under investigation by relevant security agencies.
In a statement, the NYSC extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul, reaffirming the organisation's commitment to the welfare and safety of its members.
NYSC's Response and Code of Conduct
The NYSC emphasised that it maintains a strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members and does not tolerate any act of misconduct or abuse of office. "We are cooperating fully with the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that justice is served," the statement read. The management has called on the public to refrain from speculation, stressing that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain paramount to the Scheme.
Caroline Embu concluded by urging everyone to allow due process to take its course as the authorities continue their investigations into this distressing event.
