Ondo Moves to End Court Strike, Forms Committee to Tackle Judiciary Grievances
Ondo Sets Up Committee to End Judicial Workers' Strike

The Ondo State Government has taken a decisive step to resolve the ongoing industrial action crippling court activities across the state. In response to an indefinite strike initiated by magistrates, presidents of Grade 'A' customary courts, and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), the state has constituted a high-level committee to address the workers' grievances.

Root Causes of the Industrial Action

The strike, which began about a week ago, was triggered by two major issues. The primary cause is the alleged failure of the state government to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary, a longstanding constitutional provision. Secondly, judicial workers have expressed deep frustration over poor welfare packages, which they claim have been neglected for an extended period.

Through a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the government acknowledged the disruption. The newly formed committee, comprising senior government officials, has immediately commenced work with the goal of restoring normalcy to the state's judicial system.

Accusations and Severe Impact on Court Operations

The impact of the strike has been severe, bringing court operations across Ondo State to a virtual standstill. This has delayed justice delivery and created a backlog of cases.

Striking workers have pointed fingers at specific officials, accusing the state's Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, and the Commissioner for Finance, Omowumi Isaac, of "strangling the judicial arm of government". Their alleged method is by withholding the financial autonomy guaranteed to the judiciary, thereby crippling its operations and independence.

Government's Path to Resolution

Commissioner Ajanaku emphasized the government's commitment to a peaceful and lasting resolution. He stated that the committee's mandate is to engage with the striking workers to resolve all outstanding issues.

"The Ondo State Government has constituted a committee to address the grievances of striking magistrates, presidents of Grade 'A' customary courts, and members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), with a view to resolving the issues and fostering enduring industrial harmony within the State Judiciary," Ajanaku said.

He assured the public that the government aims to settle the dispute through an acceptable and sustainable framework, built on mutual understanding from all parties involved. The move signals an attempt to break the deadlock that has paralyzed legal proceedings since the strike commenced.
