President Bola Tinubu has issued a powerful call to the nation's judges, declaring that a fearless and fully functional judiciary is non-negotiable for building a just society in Nigeria.
A Pledge of Support for the Judiciary
While officially opening the 2025 All Nigerian Judges Conference on Monday in Abuja, President Tinubu assured the judicial arm of his administration's full backing. He stated a clear resolve to provide the institutional and material support required for courts to perform their duties with dignity, confidence, and efficiency.
The President emphasized that the strength and honour of the judiciary are rooted in its proper and unequivocal interpretation of the constitution. He urged judges to safeguard the integrity of their profession, stating that public perception of the Bench is of utmost concern for the protection of Nigeria's democracy.
Public Confidence as the 'Currency of Justice'
President Tinubu described the conference's theme, 'Building a Confident Judiciary,' as exceptionally timely. He elaborated that confidence is the lifeblood of justice, noting that even a legally sound judgment loses its moral authority if the public does not perceive it as fair and impartial.
'The confidence of the people is the living measure of the Judiciary's legitimacy and the true currency of justice,' the President stated. He acknowledged with candor that public perception has not always been favorable, citing citizen frustrations with delays, concerns about integrity, and anxiety over access to justice.
CJN Expresses Gratitude
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, expressed deep appreciation for the President's commitment to the cause of justice in the country.
Justice Kekere-Ekun told the gathering that they had convened not merely to reflect on their responsibilities but to take a decisive step towards a judiciary that embodies integrity, resilience, and unwavering public confidence. 'The temple of Justice trembles where justice is denied. We must be a symbol of incorruptible honour,' the CJN added.
The biennial conference, held at the National Judicial Institute, brings together judges from across the country to deliberate on crucial issues affecting the judicial system and its role in national development.
