The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has started the screening process for candidates from 11 political parties contesting in the upcoming Enugu State Local Government Elections. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, ENSIEC has set September 26 as the date for elections to fill 17 chairmanship and 260 councillorship positions across the state.
Screening Schedule and Process
Solomon Udeh, a Commissioner at ENSIEC, informed NAN on Monday in Enugu that the screening would last five days. He explained that the exercise follows the revised timetable for the local elections, which aligns with the amended 2026 Electoral Act. The commissioner highlighted that the screening comes after political parties conducted their primaries in the state, which were monitored by the commission.
Councillorship candidates from the Enugu North Senatorial District were screened on June 7, followed by those from Enugu West Senatorial District on June 8, and Enugu East Senatorial District on June 9. Chairmanship and vice-chairmanship candidates are scheduled for screening on June 10, with a mop-up screening set for June 11 to conclude the exercise.
Participating Political Parties
The candidates being screened represent the following political parties: Nigeria Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, Action Alliance, Young Progressives Party, Social Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Because Of Our Tomorrow Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Action Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, and the Action Democratic Party.
Mr. Udeh assured all political parties of a transparent and fair screening process. He stated, “The commission is poised to conduct a credible as well as free and fair election come September 26 in the state.”
