Governor Mbah Honored for Healthcare Leadership and Budget Commitment
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has been presented with the Award of Distinguished Leadership and Outstanding Contributions to Healthcare Delivery by the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN). The union praised Mbah as a leader who has made a tangible and measurable impact on the lives of health workers and citizens in Enugu State.
Recognition for Infrastructural and Welfare Reforms
The award was conferred by the National President of MHWUN on behalf of the Enugu State Council and union representatives during a ceremony at the Government House in Enugu. MHWUN highlighted the governor's significant achievements in the health sector, which include:
- The construction of 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all 260 political wards in the state.
- The near completion of a 300-bed ultramodern Enugu International Hospital.
- The comprehensive revamping of secondary healthcare facilities.
Additionally, the union commended Mbah for implementing extensive reforms and improving the welfare of health workers, noting that these efforts have transformed healthcare delivery in the region.
Budgetary Focus on Health and Education
In his acceptance speech, Governor Mbah emphasized the critical role of a healthy population and workforce in his administration's economic strategy to grow Enugu State's economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. He revealed that over the past three budgetary cycles, his government has allocated and spent more than 50% of the state's total budget on education and health combined.
Specifically addressing health workers' welfare, Mbah announced the full implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) at 100% for medical and health workers. This long-awaited measure has provided relief and restored dignity to the workforce, according to the governor.
Cross River Governor Reaffirms Healthcare Commitment
In a related development, Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to strengthening the healthcare sector. During a courtesy visit from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State Chapter, Otu assured medical professionals of ongoing collaboration and support to enhance service delivery statewide.
Governor Otu expressed satisfaction with the recognition of his government's efforts in the medical ecosystem, stating that such appreciation motivates further action. He praised the NMA for upholding professional values like integrity, transparency, and honesty, which he described as essential pillars in healthcare.
Otu acknowledged the association's concerns and pledged continuous engagement to address issues comprehensively, urging the delegation to remain committed to their duties.
