The Centre for Women’s Rights and Development Initiative (CWRDI) has voiced strong concern over reports indicating a possible suspension or removal of Hon. Mrs. Alice Allen Tangi, the Chairperson of Sagbama Local Government Area in Bayelsa State. In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Dr. Mrs. Marilyn Damian Okoro, the organization demanded that any action taken against the elected official must strictly follow legal and constitutional procedures.
Only Female LG Chair in Bayelsa at Risk
Hon. Tangi is the sole female serving as a local government chairperson in Bayelsa State. CWRDI emphasized that her position symbolizes progress for women’s representation in governance and warned that any irregular removal would undermine democratic principles. The group stressed that reports of her potential ouster have sparked widespread concern over local government administration, democratic governance, and women’s political participation.
Calls for Due Process and Supreme Court Ruling
According to Dr. Okoro, all stakeholders must respect constitutional provisions that govern elected public officials. The organization referenced the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment of July 11, 2024, which affirmed local government autonomy. CWRDI argued that this ruling reinforces the constitutional framework guiding local government administration in Nigeria and that any decision affecting elected officials must follow established legal procedures. The group also highlighted the right to freedom of association as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Appeals to Federal Authorities and Security Agencies
CWRDI called on the Attorney-General of the Federation and other relevant institutions to ensure that constitutional safeguards are upheld. It also appealed to security agencies to maintain peace and protect the safety of all public office holders. The organization urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other authorities to continue supporting the implementation of constitutional protections for local government administration and democratic governance. CWRDI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s political participation, the rule of law, and democratic institutions, while calling on all parties to resolve political disagreements through lawful and peaceful means.
