Political Analyst Condemns El-Rufai's Detention as Abuse of Power by Tinubu Government
The National Coordinator of the Citizens Coalition, Kelly Agaba, has strongly condemned the prolonged detention of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai without formal charges or trial. Agaba described this action as a blatant abuse of power by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government, warning that it represents a dangerous regression to Nigeria's troubled past.
Judicial Intervention Essential for Addressing Allegations
During an exclusive interview on Sunday, March 22, 2026, Agaba emphasized that the judiciary remains the appropriate platform for addressing any allegations against El-Rufai. "If the government has legitimate concerns about El-Rufai's conduct, they should pursue proper legal channels rather than resorting to extra-judicial detention," Agaba stated. He characterized the current situation as clear political persecution that undermines Nigeria's democratic principles.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recently secured a 14-day extension to detain El-Rufai over money laundering allegations. The former governor has remained in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, facing accusations related to financial misconduct and communications involving Nuhu Ribadu.
Nigerians Will Resist Rights Infringements
Agaba warned that Nigerian citizens will not remain passive while their constitutional rights are being violated. "The people will speak out against this injustice," he declared. "Nigerians understand the importance of government accountability and will resist any attempts to trample on their fundamental freedoms."
The political analyst also noted that the international community is closely monitoring the situation, adding pressure on the Tinubu administration to adhere to proper legal procedures and democratic norms.
Legal Proceedings and Political Implications
Magistrate Okechukwu Akweke of the Abuja court has scheduled a ruling date after the ICPC filed an application seeking the 14-day detention extension. Meanwhile, El-Rufai has approached the Federal Capital Territory High Court to challenge what he describes as unlawful detention and has filed a multi-billion-naira damages suit against the alleged illegal confinement.
Political observers suggest that El-Rufai's detention may extend further as the 2027 elections approach. Analyst Omotayo Yusuf indicated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) might be strategically managing El-Rufai's situation for political advantage.
Agaba addressed arguments that El-Rufai's detention represents a necessary anti-corruption measure, stating: "While corruption remains a serious national concern, we cannot justify extra-judicial detention as a solution. Such approaches create dangerous precedents that ultimately weaken our democratic institutions and rule of law."
The Citizens Coalition coordinator concluded that this case represents a critical test for Nigeria's democratic resilience and the Tinubu administration's commitment to constitutional governance.
