Defending Murtala Sule Garo Amid Kano's Political Turmoil
In recent weeks, the media landscape in Kano State has been inundated with intense discussions and speculations regarding the selection of the next deputy governor. While such debates are commonplace in the political arena, the situation has taken a concerning turn with the escalating and targeted attacks against Honorable Murtala Sule Garo. Initially, I opted to remain silent, but the pervasive spread of misinformation and orchestrated falsehoods has compelled me to voice my perspective. I have no personal ties to Garo, yet I firmly advocate for justice and fairness, principles that seem to be under threat in this unfolding drama.
The Coordinated Campaign Against Garo
What is transpiring extends far beyond healthy political discourse. It appears to be a calculated effort to tarnish the reputation of a prominent figure, driven not by genuine public interest but by internal power struggles within the All Progressives Congress (APC). Garo, widely recognized as "Commander," is not merely another politician; he stands out as one of the most influential grassroots mobilizers in Kano. As he is being considered as a potential deputy to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, he has suddenly become the focal point of renewed allegations and recycled narratives, clearly designed to undermine his prospects.
With Governor Yusuf now firmly entrenched within the APC and widely anticipated to secure an automatic ticket, it is evident that certain political ambitions have been thwarted. Among those affected are individuals whose own gubernatorial aspirations have faced setbacks. In politics, when ambitions are obstructed, conflicts often shift direction. Thus, the sustained assaults on Garo should not be viewed in isolation; they reflect a broader struggle for influence and control within the party.
Selective Allegations and Media Trials
What I find most alarming is the selective deployment of allegations as political weapons. Some of the same voices vehemently attacking Garo are themselves associated with unresolved accusations. Yet, they speak as if guilt has already been established against him, which is fundamentally unjust. Our legal system is unequivocal: every accused individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law. In Garo's case, the allegations remain unresolved, with some related charges even dismissed, and there appears to be minimal enthusiasm from the complainant to pursue the matter earnestly. Consequently, what we are witnessing is not a pursuit of justice but a media trial.
Garo's Grassroots Relevance and Contributions
Beyond the cacophony of accusations, there exists an undeniable truth: Murtala Sule Garo boasts a profound connection with the people of Kano. He is not a politician who operates solely from Abuja; his relevance is deeply rooted in communities across local governments, engaging youths, traders, farmers, and party loyalists. Since the APC exited office in 2023, he has played a pivotal role in quietly sustaining the party's structure, supporting members, and maintaining political engagement at the grassroots level.
His track record in public office speaks volumes. From championing education and infrastructure projects to empowering young people with startup capital and essential tools, Garo has demonstrated a tangible commitment to development. These are not mere promises but visible efforts that resonate with the populace. In a state like Kano, where young people constitute a significant portion of the population, such grassroots connections are invaluable. Garo brings energy, experience, and political acumen, understanding the base and knowing how to mobilize it effectively.
The Critical Decision for Governor Yusuf
The decision facing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is of paramount importance. Selecting a deputy is not merely about filling a vacancy; it is about fortifying governance and ensuring political stability ahead of the upcoming elections. My counsel is straightforward: ignore the noise. Negative campaigns, particularly those fueled by internal rivalries, can be deceptive, often reducing complex individuals to one-dimensional caricatures. Leadership demands a focus on facts, performance, and political realities.
Garo is not flawless; no politician is. However, perfection should not be the benchmark; capacity and capability should. The pertinent question is whether he possesses the requisite qualities to contribute meaningfully to governance and bolster the party. In my assessment, he does. Furthermore, I believe the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not overlook a politician of Garo's caliber. Grassroots leaders with genuine followership are rare and should not be discarded lightly. Succumbing to smear campaigns would only erode party unity and alienate a substantial segment of Kano's political base.
Upholding Fairness and Integrity
Conversely, making a fair and independent decision based on merit would send a powerful message of leadership and integrity. Ultimately, this issue transcends Murtala Sule Garo; it is about the type of politics we aspire to practice—whether driven by fairness and justice or shaped by manipulation and deceit. For me, the choice is unequivocal: we must champion principles that uphold dignity and truth in our political engagements.
