Ikorodu Division Underrepresented in Key Political Structures, Stakeholders Assert
Stakeholders, political leaders, and community influencers have declared that Ikorodu Division continues to be underrepresented in essential political structures, despite its increasing population and strategic significance as a residential hub. This persistent issue underscores the structural imbalances in representation that are hindering the division's progress and development.
I-Heroes AGM Highlights Unity and Collaboration
During the I-Heroes yearly general meeting and public discussion, themed "Amplify: Ikorodu Division's Stake in Lagos Politics – Amplifying Our Strengths, Weaknesses and Potentials and Sorting the Path of Glory," participants emphasized the critical need for collective responsibility, unity, and effective power management. They stressed that collaboration among political actors is paramount to achieving lasting progress and addressing the division's challenges.
Historical Context and Structural Imbalances
In a keynote lecture, S.O.K. Shillings traced the historical and political evolution of Lagos State, highlighting the structural imbalances in representation that specifically affect Ikorodu Division. He noted that, despite its growing population and strategic importance as a residential hub, Ikorodu remains significantly underrepresented in key political structures, which has contributed to ongoing developmental delays.
Pressing Challenges Facing Ikorodu Division
President of I-Heroes, Majolagbe Olanshile, addressed several urgent issues plaguing the division during his speech. He highlighted:
- Insecurity: Cult-related violence and land grabbing are major concerns that require improved collaboration among security agencies.
- Infrastructural Deficits: Critical road infrastructure, particularly the Bola Tinubu Road linking Igbe Laara in Igbogbo Local Council Development Area, is in deplorable condition and needs immediate government prioritization.
- Youth Unemployment: Rising unemployment has led to an increase in social vices, underscoring the need for sustainable youth empowerment programs.
Olanshile called on political leaders and institutions to create sustainable opportunities that will engage young people productively, thereby addressing the root causes of these social issues.
Badagry Division Advocates for Governorship Zoning
In a related development, traditional rulers in Badagry Division have advocated for the Lagos State governorship seat to be zoned to their area in 2027. Led by Aholu Olalekan Sejiro, the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, they cited principles of justice, equity, and fairness during a media briefing in Badagry. This call was made while declaring support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election, aiming to address what they described as a "longstanding imbalance in Lagos State's political leadership structure."
The discussions at the I-Heroes AGM and the advocacy from Badagry Division highlight ongoing concerns about political representation and equity across Lagos State, urging a reevaluation of current structures to foster more inclusive development.
