A prominent Nigerian cleric, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s chances of winning a second term in 2027 will be seriously threatened if opposition parties successfully coordinate against him. Ayodele, the founder and spiritual head of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke Afa, Lagos, made this known in a statement released on Monday, August 3, 2026.
The statement, sent to Legit.ng through his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, arrives as political consultations and coalition talks among opposition figures continue to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election.
Opposition unity as the deciding factor
According to Ayodele, the outcome of the 2027 contest will not rest on financial muscle or temporary political alliances, but on how well the opposition is able to present a common front. He insisted that the president’s electoral fate is largely in the hands of his opponents.
“It is only if the opposition doesn’t work along the line that the president will come back; if not, it will be very difficult. They are only packaging the President, and even the INEC cannot give him victory,” Ayodele stated.
The cleric’s comment appears to suggest that the president could still return to power if the opposition fails to unify, but that any coherent challenge would make Tinubu’s path to a renewed mandate extremely difficult.
The north: a restless electoral force
Beyond the opposition’s coordination, Ayodele raised a separate but potentially consequential warning about northern Nigeria. He described the region as “not settled” and indicated that northern voters could make a decisive move late in the electoral timetable.
“What is on the ground is serious, and the north isn’t settled at all; the northerners will show themselves at the 11th hour. It will not look well if the president ends his second-term ambition in shame and disgrace, and apart from this, the aura of the election date isn’t good for Tinubu’s victory,” Ayodele added.
The north has traditionally played a dominant role in Nigerian presidential elections due to its large voter population. Ayodele’s prophecy raises the possibility of a late swing that could alter the political arithmetic in unforeseen ways.
Opposition moves and the 2027 race
Ayodele’s latest prophecy unfolds against a backdrop of active coalition discussions among opposition politicians. Peter Obi, who was ratified as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on May 29, 2026, is among the figures being closely monitored. His emergence has already reshaped conversations around opposition unity, with multiple parties weighing the benefits of a shared candidate. Ideological differences and personal ambitions, however, continue to complicate merger proposals.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also weighed in, cautioning that campaigning at this stage is illegal. That warning aligns with the position of prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, who has repeatedly criticised early electioneering.
A track record of political prophecies
Primate Ayodele has long been known for releasing prophecies touching on Nigeria’s leadership and electoral politics. In earlier examples, he prophesied a showdown in 2027 and advised President Tinubu on his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima. He also claimed that three people were capable of unseating the president, and separately reacted to US military threats by declaring that “the US is not joking,” while sending a strong message to Tinubu. These prophecies often generate significant public discussion, especially as elections approach.

Whether his prediction will materialise remains unknown, but the conversation around the 2027 election continues to draw significant attention from within and outside Nigeria.
