Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the ruling party has abandoned its founding ideals. The former Bayelsa State governor announced his departure in a resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Founding Member Cites Consultation and Disillusionment
In the letter, which was electronically delivered, Sylva described himself as a founding member of the APC and said his decision came after wide consultations with his family, associates, colleagues, and sympathisers. He stated that he could no longer remain in the party, expressing that his departure was effective immediately.
“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” Sylva said in the letter. He recalled his role in helping to build the party from its inception, underscoring his long-standing commitment to its formation.
Allegations Against APC Leadership
The former minister also took a swipe at the APC leadership, alleging that its approach to politics has eroded basic standards of decency and morality. He was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in November 2025 over allegations of conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257 of NCDMB funds. The funds were reportedly intended for a refinery project at the Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.
