The Ijaw National Congress (INC), the apex socio-cultural body for the Ijaw ethnic nationality, has issued a strong condemnation of the renewed impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
A Threat to Democracy and Stability
In a statement released on 9 January 2026, the INC described the legislative move as a severe threat to democracy, peace, and stability not only in Rivers State but across the entire Niger Delta region. The group, which represents the Ijaw people globally, stated that it stands firmly with the citizens of Rivers State in defending constitutional order and rejecting what it termed a dangerous political escalation.
The statement, signed by the National President of the INC, Professor Benjamin Okaba, highlighted that this marks the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara since 2023. The INC views this pattern as a troubling sign of political vendetta that must be stopped to preserve democratic norms.
Calls for Due Process and Presidential Intervention
The INC emphasized that the crisis transcends ethnic interests, framing it as a crucial test for Nigeria's democratic integrity. It argued that the allegations raised by the State Assembly, which include concerns over budgetary spending and gubernatorial appointments, should be properly examined through established legal channels and due process, rather than through impeachment.
"This crisis is not just an Ijaw issue but a crucial test for Nigeria’s democracy," the statement read. It noted that its position is supported by individuals from diverse political backgrounds within the state who also seek an end to the impeachment proceedings.
A significant part of the appeal was directed at the nation's leadership. "We respectfully urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene decisively as the nation’s leader, upholding constitutional democracy, ensuring fairness, curbing instability, and protecting federal allocations to Rivers State," the INC stated.
Appeal for Peace and Unity
In light of the escalating tensions, the Ijaw National Congress called for calm and lawful conduct from all residents. It urged Ijaw people and all citizens of Rivers State to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and resolute in their support for democratic principles through peaceful civic engagement.
The group also called on Ijaws worldwide to defend unity within Rivers State and beyond, stressing the urgent need to de-escalate the crisis and refocus efforts on peace and development. "The Ijaw National Congress is committed to Nigeria’s unity, peace and progress. We will closely monitor the situation and take all necessary steps to protect the rights of the Ijaw people and all Rivers State residents, ensuring that democracy prevails," the statement concluded.
