The Ondo State House of Assembly has been thrown into turmoil as 21 out of 26 lawmakers signed a resolution suspending all plenary sessions indefinitely, demanding the immediate resignation of Speaker Olamide Oladiji. The crisis stems from allegations that the speaker mismanaged N44 million released by the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) for the reordering of the commission's 2026 budget.

According to the Assembly's spokesperson, Olatunji Ifabiyi, the decision to halt legislative business is a collective stance until a new speaker emerges. “We have resolved not to hold a plenary until there is a change of Speaker,” Mr Ifabiyi stated. He emphasized that the lawmakers are united in their demand for Mr Oladiji to step aside voluntarily, failing which impeachment proceedings will commence.
“For now, there is no development except that Mr Speaker should just give way and allow another person to preside over the Ondo State House of Assembly,” he said. If the speaker refuses to resign, Mr Ifabiyi warned, “We will do the needful,” signaling imminent removal.
Allegations of Financial Mismanagement
The controversy centers on the N44 million disbursed by OSOPADEC, which lawmakers claim was handled without their input. The funds were reportedly allocated for reordering the commission's 2026 budget, but the speaker's unilateral actions have sparked accusations of financial impropriety. The impeachment notice signed by the majority of lawmakers cites these allegations as the primary grounds for seeking Mr Oladiji's removal.

However, Mr Ifabiyi refuted this account, stating he was unaware of any such meeting and reaffirming that lawmakers have not changed their position. The Ondo upheaval occurs shortly after the Ogun State House of Assembly revisited a similar controversy. In a dramatic reversal, Ogun lawmakers cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of embezzlement allegations that led to his removal nearly three years ago. Investigations found no evidence to support claims of fund diversion, leading the Assembly to downgrade his impeachment to a resignation while upholding the leadership change as constitutionally valid.
