The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reversed its earlier decision to zone the governorship ticket to the Abia Central senatorial district for the 2027 general elections. The reversal comes amid a wave of criticism from key aspirants, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and Mascot Uzor Kalu.
Initial Zoning Decision Sparks Controversy
On Thursday, April 30, the state working committee of the APC in Abia had announced the zoning of the governorship ticket to the Abia Central zone. This move was met with immediate backlash from several governorship aspirants who argued that the decision was unfair and exclusionary. Among the most vocal critics were Benjamin Kalu and Mascot Uzor Kalu, both of whom have expressed interest in the governorship race.
National Leadership Steps In
Following the uproar, the APC's national leadership intervened. Uche Aguoru, the party's publicity secretary in Abia State, issued a statement on Friday, May 1, confirming that the national body had directed the cancellation of all zoning arrangements previously made by the state working committee. Aguoru emphasized that all positions, including the governorship, are now open to all interested aspirants.
According to the statement: "By this directive, all aspirants interested in contesting for any position from the House of Assembly, Reps, Senate and Governorship, are hereby advised that they are free to approach the party and purchase their nomination forms before the stipulated deadline as outlined by the party."
Benjamin Kalu Receives FNIPR Honour
Amid the political developments, Benjamin Kalu, one of the frontrunners for the APC governorship ticket, was honoured with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (FNIPR Hons) during the Nigeria Public Relations Week 2026 in Kaduna. The recognition drew congratulatory messages from his supporters on social media.
