The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has broken its silence on the continued silence of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi regarding his selection as the party's vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. The opposition party insists that there is no internal crisis or disagreement over Amaechi's nomination and fully supports the choice made by the party leadership.
ADC Spokesperson Questions Need for Public Acceptance
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking on Trust TV's Daily Politics on Monday night, June 22, 2026, questioned why Amaechi was expected to publicly accept the nomination. Abdullahi argued that political parties, not candidates, formally announce the choice of vice presidential candidate, and the process leading to Amaechi's emergence had been duly followed.
“What more do you expect from the candidate? For him to come out and say, ‘Oh, my party has nominated me as running mate, I hereby accept’? When is it ever done?” Abdullahi said.
No Crisis Within the Party
Abdullahi dismissed concerns that Amaechi's silence indicates disagreement or uncertainty within the party. He emphasized that the party had taken a clear position and announced Amaechi as the running mate to presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
“The party has taken a position; the party has announced. Did you hear anybody come out to say, ‘No, it’s not true, I’m not the running mate’? The party has announced that our running mate in 2027 is His Excellency Rotimi Amaechi,” Abdullahi stated.
He further disclosed that Atiku and Amaechi would be formally presented to Nigerians at the appropriate time, likely before the official campaign period begins.
Atiku-Amaechi Ticket: A Unifying Force
Political analyst Kelly Agaba has advocated for the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a unifying force for the 2027 presidential election. Agaba emphasized the balance and experience represented by the duo, noting that Nigerians desire competent leadership that values diversity and unity.
“The Atiku-Amaechi ticket brings together two experienced politicians from different regions, offering a blend of northern and southern perspectives. This could be the key to defeating the incumbent,” Agaba said.
Formal Unveiling Delayed by Atiku's Travel
Reports indicate that the formal unveiling of Amaechi as the vice presidential candidate has been delayed due to Atiku's travel schedule. Media aides have dismissed rumors of tension within the ADC and confirmed that the partnership remains strong. The formal presentation is expected shortly after Atiku returns from his trip, amid ongoing political speculation.
The ADC's decision to pick Amaechi as Atiku's running mate has generated significant interest, with many analysts viewing it as a strategic move to broaden the party's appeal ahead of the 2027 elections.
