Adebayo Secures SDP Presidential Ticket for 2027
By Kehinde Olatunji
Adewole Adebayo has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general elections. His candidacy was confirmed at the party's national convention held in Bauchi, where he was adopted by consensus as the sole aspirant. Delegates from all 36 states endorsed his nomination, and the convention also elected new members of the party's National Working Committee.
Concerns Over Economy and Security
Addressing party faithful after his emergence, Adebayo expressed deep concern over Nigeria's worsening economic situation, rising insecurity, and what he described as declining democratic values. He highlighted that many Nigerians are grappling with unemployment, poor healthcare, and increasing hardship, despite the country's vast resources.
The former presidential candidate criticized political leaders for prioritizing foreign medical trips and overseas investments while domestic public infrastructure continues to deteriorate. He noted that a significant number of citizens still lack access to quality healthcare and decent living conditions.
Call for Transparency and Accountability
Adebayo also raised alarms about the state of security in the country, alleging that Nigerians deserve a more transparent and accountable system capable of protecting lives and property. He warned against threats to multiparty democracy, arguing that Nigeria's democratic future hinges on preserving political plurality and freedom of association.
According to him, the concentration of political power in the hands of a few individuals could undermine democratic governance. He further maintained that political parties should remain ideologically driven and committed to national unity and development, rather than personal interests.
Appreciation for Bauchi Governor
The SDP chieftain commended Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for supporting the hosting of the convention despite alleged attempts by unnamed persons to frustrate the event. He described the governor as a defender of democratic principles and praised his leadership style.
Adebayo concluded by stating that the 2027 election will provide Nigerians with another opportunity to redefine the country's political direction and strengthen democratic institutions.
