NNPP's Aderibigbe Resigns Ahead of 2027, Vows Focus on Governance Reform
Adekunle Aderibigbe resigns from NNPP, cites new path

In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, a prominent figure in Lagos State politics has stepped away from his party. Adekunle Razaq Aderibigbe, who was the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) candidate for Ikorodu Constituency I in the 2023 Lagos State House of Assembly election, has formally resigned from the party.

A Letter of Resignation and a New Direction

The resignation was communicated through a letter dated Sunday, January 4, 2026, addressed to the NNPP chairman of Ipakodo Ward in Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos State. The letter was also sent to the party's Lagos State executives and its National Working Committee (NWC). In it, Aderibigbe stated that his departure reflects a deliberate shift in his approach to national service.

He emphasized that his decision was made after careful thought about his personal values and long-term goals. "My decision comes after careful reflection and deep consideration of my personal values, professional responsibilities, and long-term aspirations in public policy, governance, and national development," he wrote. He clarified that while his time with the NNPP was valuable, he now seeks a broader platform for engagement.

Focus on Policy, Not Partisanship

Aderibigbe's next steps are clearly outlined in his resignation. He intends to channel his energies into contributing to Nigeria's progress outside the traditional framework of party politics. His focus areas will include policy research, governance reform, institutional strengthening, and thought leadership.

"This resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from national service or civic responsibility," he assured. "Rather, it reflects my intention to contribute to Nigeria’s development through policy research, governance reform, institutional strengthening, and thought leadership, outside partisan political structures." This move signals a growing trend of politically experienced individuals seeking to influence development through alternative, non-partisan avenues.

Gratitude and a Clean Break

The former House of Assembly aspirant expressed sincere appreciation for the opportunities given to him by the NNPP. He thanked the party's leadership, members, and supporters for their trust and cooperation, noting that the experience deepened his understanding of grassroots politics and democratic engagement in Nigeria.

To ensure a complete separation, Aderibigbe stated that his resignation applies to all roles, responsibilities, and committee memberships he held at every level within the NNPP's structure. He concluded his letter by formally requesting the acceptance of his resignation and wishing the party success in its future endeavors. This development occurs amidst other internal dynamics within the NNPP, including recent denials by former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso regarding defection rumors.
