Nigerian activist and political ally of Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, has officially withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing an abrupt end to her brief campaign for the 2027 election.
Background of the Candidacy
Yesufu had declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat on May 6, shortly after defecting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC. She cited the leadership experience gained within the new party as a key motivation for her political ambition.
Internal Party Dynamics
Recent developments within the NDC suggested internal realignments over the FCT senatorial ticket. Indications emerged that the party may have favored another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who had been a longstanding member prior to Yesufu's defection. This shift in preference contributed to the uncertainty surrounding the primary process.
In a statement released on Friday, Yesufu confirmed that the party would not conduct primaries for the FCT senatorial seat, a decision that effectively ended her participation in the race. She stated, “Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for the House of Representatives. Go ahead and make your choice known!”
Call for Calm and Focus
Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and redirect their attention to the broader political objectives ahead of the 2027 general elections. She emphasized the importance of unity and focus on the presidential election. “I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she said.
She expressed gratitude for the support received during her campaign, saying, “I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.”
Continued Engagement
Despite the withdrawal, Yesufu affirmed her commitment to engaging with residents across the FCT. She announced plans to visit all six area councils in the coming week to thank them for their warm reception and to continue advocating for a better FCT. “In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she added.
The development marks a setback for Yesufu's senatorial ambition, while highlighting ongoing internal adjustments within the NDC as the party prepares for the forthcoming polls.
