APC and ADC Engage in Heated Exchange Over National Concerns
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have intensified their verbal confrontation regarding pressing national issues and the Federal Government's handling of them. While the ruling party staunchly defends what it calls the administration's socioeconomic progress, the opposition party paints a starkly different picture of reality for ordinary Nigerians.
APC Condemns ADC's 'Birthday Message' as Disgraceful
The Lagos State chapter of the APC has strongly criticized earlier remarks by the ADC, which were framed as a birthday message to President Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the APC described the ADC's communication as disgraceful and indicative of a party in crisis.
The statement emphasized: "At a time when basic human decency demands restraint and goodwill, the ADC has chosen the low road of bitterness and petty political hostility." The APC further asserted that the ADC's comments failed to meet fundamental standards of decency and civility, undermining constructive political discourse.
ADC Counters with Harsh Reality Check
In response, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, launched a sharp critique of the Presidency's reaction to the issues highlighted in their birthday message. Abdullahi argued that the rebuttal, published by Mr. Sunday Dare, deliberately sidestepped the harsh everyday experiences of Nigerians.
Abdullahi elaborated on the economic hardships: "Inflation is not an abstract concept. It is the mother who can no longer afford food the way she did a year ago. It is the young worker whose salary has remained stagnant while transport fares have doubled under this government. It is the small business owner watching costs escalate faster than sales."
He directly linked these struggles to specific policy decisions, stating: "These are not theories. They are the direct consequences of decisions taken under the Bola Tinubu-led APC administration, particularly the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy without any immediate or credible cushioning for over 200 million Nigerians. Today, fuel prices have risen by nearly 500 percent, and everything else has followed."
ADC Demands Answers on Fuel Prices and Security
Abdullahi characterized Mr. Dare's rebuttal as a carefully worded article that avoided substantive answers. He pressed for clarity on critical matters, questioning: "On the price of fuel, is the Tinubu government telling Nigerians that there is nothing they can do to bring down the price of fuel? Since the war on Iran started, governments all over the world have taken different emergency measures to keep the price of fuel down. But all we hear from the Tinubu government is that Nigerians should continue to endure."
Regarding security, Abdullahi's tone grew more somber: "The conversation is even more painful, because it is about lives. Under this presidency, Nigeria now ranks fourth on the Global Terrorism Index. But beyond rankings are real people, families who have lost loved ones, communities that no longer sleep with both eyes closed. Daughters raped in front of their fathers, and wives raped in front of their children."
He highlighted recent tragedies to underscore the urgency, noting: "In the short time between our birthday message and this rebuttal, at least 12 Nigerians were killed in Plateau State. 12 people. 12 families. In just a few hours. This is why Nigerians expect urgency, not explanations."
