The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has made key appointments for its upcoming presidential primary election. Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, who served from 2000 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the Government of the Federation under President Goodluck Jonathan, has been named chairman of the presidential primary election committee.
Committee Members and Roles
Sanusi Musa, a prominent party chieftain, has been appointed as secretary of the committee. The committee also includes five other influential politicians, among them another former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Governors as State Coordinators
The APC has also appointed all its governors, including Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, as coordinators of the primaries in their respective states. This move is aimed at ensuring smooth and coordinated primary elections across the country.
The party had earlier scheduled its presidential primary for Saturday, May 23, in line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Official Statement
Felix Morka, the party's spokesperson, announced the development in a statement on Thursday, May 21. He emphasized that the decisions were approved by the Party's National Working Committee (NWC) in accordance with the APC constitution, the Electoral Act, and the party's commitment to a transparent and credible primary election process.
The full statement was shared on the party's official social media platforms.
