An aspirant for the Imo East Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Belusochukwu Michael Enwere, has officially withdrawn from the race ahead of the party's primary election. The decision was announced in a statement dated May 17, following extensive consultations with his family, supporters, political associates, and party leaders.
Reasons for Withdrawal
Enwere explained that his withdrawal was aimed at promoting peace, unity, and progress within the party and the senatorial district. He stated, "After wide consultations with my family, supporters, political associates, and leaders of our great party, I have decided to step down from the contest for the Imo East Senatorial seat." He emphasized that the decision was not easy but was taken in the interest of peace and unity.
Continued Commitment
Although Enwere did not disclose whether he would endorse another aspirant, he reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Imo East and the growth of the APC. "I remain committed to the development of our senatorial zone and will continue to contribute positively to the growth of our party and society," he added.
Appreciation to Leaders and Supporters
Enwear expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, and the APC leadership for their support. He said, "I sincerely appreciate Mr President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; my Governor, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma; and our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the opportunity and support given to me throughout this process." He also thanked his supporters for their belief in his vision and encouragement.
Appeal for Peace
The former aspirant urged his followers to remain calm and united despite his withdrawal. "I urge all my supporters to remain calm, united, and continue supporting the collective interest of our people," he said. The move is seen as a step to strengthen party cohesion ahead of the primaries.
Context of the Withdrawal
This development comes amid heightened political activities in Imo State. In a similar move, Senator Gbenga Daniel of Ogun East withdrew from the APC senatorial primary citing fears of violence and threats against his supporters. Daniel's withdrawal followed a political dispute with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun over the APC ticket. The APC primaries are scheduled to hold across the country, with many aspirants making strategic decisions to ensure party unity and electoral success.
