Key Defection in Bayelsa State
Gabriel Claudius, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside his supporters in Elebele, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The defectors were officially received on Monday at a ceremony attended by PDP leaders at the local and state levels.
PDP Leadership Welcomes Returnees
Ogbia PDP Chairman Ofoni Morgan welcomed the group, describing the PDP as the political home of the people of the area. Morgan noted that the PDP produced Nigeria's first President from the Ijaw ethnic nationality and continues to enjoy widespread support. He hailed Claudius as a grassroots politician whose return would strengthen the party in Elebele and across Ogbia Local Government Area.
State Chairman Calls for More Government Action
PDP State Chairman George Turnah officially received the defectors and used the occasion to appeal to the Bayelsa State Government to intensify efforts against poverty, unemployment, and economic hardship. Turnah alleged that despite increased federal allocations, many youths and women remain economically disadvantaged. He stressed that Elebele has a vibrant youth population deserving greater political inclusion and participation in governance.
Defection Seen as Homecoming
PDP leader in Bayelsa, Joshua Maciver, described the defection as a homecoming, expressing the party's pleasure in receiving Claudius and his supporters. Maciver stated that the PDP remains determined to reclaim elective positions in future elections, including Senate, House of Representatives, and Bayelsa State House of Assembly seats. He dismissed concerns that recent political realignments would weaken the party, insisting it remains focused on victory.
Claudius Expresses Confidence in PDP
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Gabriel Claudius said the PDP is restructuring and repositioning ahead of future elections. He expressed confidence that the party will emerge stronger and more competitive in the next electoral cycle. The event signals ongoing political realignments in Bayelsa State as parties gear up for upcoming contests.
