The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has explained why it selected Damilola Sonayon-James as the deputy governorship candidate, emphasizing youth inclusion and grassroots appeal.
Party Chairman Highlights Sonayon-James' Qualities
Cornelius Ojelabi, the Lagos APC chairman, stated that Sonayon-James was chosen as the running mate to Obafemi Hamzat after extensive consultations and a rigorous selection process. He noted that the Hamzat-James ticket represents a blend of experience, innovation, and strong grassroots connections.
Sonayon-James, 41, serves as the deputy APC women leader in Lagos State and is a princess from Badagry Division. Her father was a member of the House of Representatives. Ojelabi praised her innovative thinking and proven leadership in both private and public sectors.
Commitment to Inclusive Leadership
According to Ojelabi, the selection reinforces the APC's dedication to inclusive leadership, youth participation, women representation, and the advancement of Lagos as Africa's leading center of innovation, opportunity, and sustainable development. He added that Sonayon-James' grassroots acceptance and party loyalty were key factors in her emergence.
Hamzat's Governorship Bid
Obafemi Hamzat, the current deputy governor of Lagos, secured the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 elections after winning the party's primary. He has received endorsements from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who declared him as his preferred successor. The Governance Advisory Council of the Lagos APC also unanimously backed Hamzat, pledging to purchase his nomination form.
The APC believes the Hamzat-James ticket is capable of advancing the developmental aspirations of Lagosians, combining experience, innovation, and visionary leadership.
