El-Rufai's Wife Appeals to President Tinubu Over Bail Conditions

Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has made a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in her husband's legal case after the family failed to meet the bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Kaduna. The family's inability to secure a required property attestation from the Kaduna State traditional council has blocked compliance with the court's bail terms, leaving the former governor in custody.

Bail Terms Deemed Unviable

Speaking in a broadcast aired by ARISE News on July 8, 2026, Asiya El-Rufai detailed the bail conditions imposed by Justice Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Kaduna. The court granted bail for two sureties, each required to post N200 million, with property worth N200 million in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Kaduna. Additionally, the court mandated that the Traditional Council of Kaduna State provide an attestation for the property.

“In the High Court, he was denied bail. In the Federal High Court, he was granted bail with terms that are not viable,” Asiya stated. “He said that the Traditional Council of Kaduna State must give attestation. Now, efforts to get this became impossible. The Traditional Council would not give that attestation.” She appealed to President Tinubu to “tell them to allow the law to take its course. Give him a fair hearing. Allow the courts to be the arbiters.”

Public Skepticism and Reactions

The announcement has drawn sharp and skeptical responses from Nigerians on social media, with many questioning why a former governor and federal minister of El-Rufai's stature could not meet the financial requirements. @Chimex_C_klass wrote: “I don't believe that these jail terms of #200m and worth the same amount in sureties are hard for him as a Nigerian politician.” @Mitchubak added: “#400m impossible for El Rufai? That's a capital joke.” @samuelT23109996 commented: “Stop this madness, the almighty El Rufai, how can he not. Do you guys think everyone is daft like you guys?”

Concerns Over Legal Strategy and Fairness

Some commentators raised concerns about the legal strategy employed by the family. @FIXA_App noted: “Is she the one representing El-Rufai in court? If she is, that's a bad move. A national security accusation is a serious legal matter. He needs a calm, disciplined and formidable legal fighter, not someone appearing emotionally overwhelmed by the situation.” @LEOBLASTY directed criticism at the court: “Imagine what a judge is requesting. What is the problem of this country? It is as if the judge is not even interested in the substance of the case. Normally, he should want the accused in his best state for a fair trial.”

ICPC Arrests El-Rufai’s Personal Doctor

In a related development, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) arrested Professor Bello Abubakar, El-Rufai's personal doctor, for allegedly misleading the commission about El-Rufai's medical attendance. El-Rufai was caught attending a political meeting during a supposedly sanctioned medical visit, leading the ICPC to accuse him of breaching court-approved conditions in custody.

Atiku Reacts to El-Rufai's Bail Conditions

Earlier, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar warned against weaponizing bail for El-Rufai. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate raised concerns that the bail conditions could affect El-Rufai's constitutional rights and called for a fair judicial process to protect both El-Rufai and other accused individuals in Nigeria.
