Jonathan to Run on PDP Platform in 2027 Election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly set to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a report by Vanguard. A top official from Jonathan's team confirmed on Sunday, May 10, 2026, that the decision to use the PDP followed extensive deliberation over where his chances were brighter to return to power and provide quality leadership amid growing hardship and poverty in the country.

Jonathan served as Nigeria's president from 2010 to 2015. He lost the 2015 presidential election to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, becoming the first incumbent president in Nigerian history to lose re-election. The alleged confirmation of the PDP as the channel through which Jonathan hopes to return to power has opened a floodgate of struggle by entities pushing him to contest, jostling to purchase his nomination form, which the factionalised party has pegged at N100 million.

The source, who spoke in confidence, said that the groups competing to purchase the nomination form for Jonathan are aware that the deadline for submission ends on Tuesday, May 12, and they are determined to get the form for him. A notable group called the Goodluckan Movement, made up of Nigerians in the diaspora, is claiming the right to obtain the form for the 68-year-old former leader, arguing that the movement is more representative of Nigerians across the world than the northern groups also jostling for it.
