Labour Party unveils Bintu Konto as running mate for 2027

The Labour Party has officially announced Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, running alongside presidential candidate Dr Chibuzo Okereke. The nomination was disclosed in a statement by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, on Saturday in Abuja.

Extensive consultations led to Konto's selection

According to Asogwa, the decision followed broad consultations with stakeholders and reflects the party's dedication to competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism, and effective public service. He described Konto as a public health expert, humanitarian leader, and development practitioner with over three decades of professional experience.

Konto's background in public health and humanitarian work

Asogwa highlighted that Konto's work in healthcare delivery, humanitarian intervention, and community development, particularly in Northern Nigeria, has earned her recognition as a bridge builder. She retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in various leadership roles, including as Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer. In that capacity, she coordinated engagements with governments, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, and communities on health, nutrition, WASH, and humanitarian programmes. She also supervised humanitarian interventions across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, improving the lives of vulnerable persons, including internally displaced persons.

Qualifications and experience

Konto is a trained nurse, midwife, health educator, and public health specialist with a Master's Degree in Public Health. She has previously lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism. Asogwa stated that her experience in governance, humanitarian coordination, women's empowerment, and public policy implementation will strengthen the party's vision of rebuilding Nigeria.

Party reaffirms commitment to gender inclusion

Asogwa added that Konto's nomination underscores the Labour Party's commitment to gender inclusion, national unity, and competent leadership, reflecting Nigeria's diversity and aspirations. He said that Okereke and Konto represent a people-centred leadership committed to restoring hope, improving security, reviving the economy, and strengthening national institutions. He called on Nigerians to support the party's presidential candidate and his running mate in pursuit of a united, prosperous, secure, and just nation.
