The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to formally ratify former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections, following his emergence as the sole aspirant for the ticket. The party disclosed that the decision will be concluded during its nationwide primaries scheduled for today, May 29, 2026.
Primaries Details
NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the exercise will also produce governorship, National Assembly, and state House of Assembly candidates across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He explained that preparatory activities were delayed by logistical challenges linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays, including transportation constraints and limited flight availability affecting party officials and aspirants.
Preparatory Activities
According to the party, May 28 was set aside for arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and stakeholder consultations ahead of the primaries. Cleopas stressed that no security agency or external institution, including the police, DSS, or INEC officials, is permitted to participate in the internal party process.
Results and Conduct
He added that results from all states will be collated centrally and announced by the National Working Committee, warning that only the national leadership is authorised to declare outcomes. The party urged members and aspirants to remain peaceful and orderly throughout the exercise, assuring that the primaries will proceed as scheduled nationwide.
