The caucus of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the House of Representatives has declared its readiness to adopt a more assertive opposition role, pledging unwavering loyalty to the party leadership while intensifying scrutiny of the Federal Government in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Strategic Engagement with Party Leadership
Led by the House Minority Leader, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, the lawmakers made this commitment on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the National Leader of the party, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at his residence in Abuja. The visit, which doubled as a strategic political engagement, brought together a large delegation of NDC lawmakers from across the country, signaling what party insiders describe as a coordinated effort to strengthen internal unity and reposition the opposition caucus in Parliament.
Among the lawmakers present were Hon. George Ozodinobi, Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Hon. Lillian Orogbu, Hon. Atta Thaddeous Achief, Hon. Chijioke Okereke, Hon. Peter Ozokwe, Hon. Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Hon. Emeka Idu, Hon. Manuchim Omezuruike, Hon. Muktar Umar Zakari, Hon. Yusuf Umar Datti, Hon. Peter Aniekwe, and Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, among others.
Commitment to Accountability and Oversight
In his address, Hon. Ogene stated that the caucus is fully committed to strengthening opposition politics through accountability and legislative oversight. He emphasized that the group would remain firm in its loyalty to both the party and the Nigerian electorate. According to him, the NDC caucus in the House has now assumed the position of a leading opposition bloc, with the capacity to influence national debate and policy direction.
“We are here to reassure the leadership of our commitment to serve the Nigerian people and to ensure that government is held accountable in delivering democratic dividends,” he said. He added that the caucus would work collectively to amplify its voice in Parliament, insisting that opposition politics must be “purpose-driven and people-focused” as the country moves toward the next general election cycle.
Unity and Grassroots Mobilisation
The delegation also reaffirmed its support for the party’s leadership structure and pledged discipline and unity within the caucus, describing internal cohesion as critical to political success in 2027. Responding on behalf of the party leadership, former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who joined Senator Dickson in receiving the lawmakers, commended the caucus for what he described as their “rare loyalty and political maturity.”
Kwankwaso urged party members to deepen grassroots mobilisation efforts, particularly among young voters, and encouraged Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral process ahead of 2027. He also called for expanded party registration and voter engagement, stressing that sustained political participation would be key to achieving what he described as “positive national change.”
The meeting is being viewed within political circles as part of broader realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as parties intensify internal consolidation and strategy ahead of the next general elections.
