Obasa Endorses Hamzat as Lagos Next Governor
Obasa Endorses Hamzat for Lagos Governor

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has publicly endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as the next governor of the state. Obasa made the declaration on Thursday while addressing leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a consultation visit by Hamzat to party stakeholders.

Consultation and Party Unity

Speaking at the meeting, the Speaker disclosed that discussions about the 2027 governorship succession had already taken place among key political figures during his recent visit to Abuja. According to him, the position remains unchanged, hence the gathering to affirm support for Hamzat as the preferred candidate. He described Hamzat as “our father and leader,” noting that party members were aligning behind his aspiration for the state’s top office.

Importance of Engagement

Obasa emphasised the importance of consultation and engagement in the political process, stating that interaction among party stakeholders was critical to determining direction and strategy ahead of the election. “The most important thing when it comes to elections is to engage and interact. Through that, we will know the direction to go and the steps to take,” he said.

The Speaker also urged members of the APC in Agege Federal Constituency and across Lagos State to remain united and take collective decisions. He stressed that political positions within the constituency had historically been achieved through consensus, adding that no candidate had emerged without the backing of stakeholders.

Early Political Positioning

The development signals early political positioning within the Lagos APC as consultations intensify ahead of the next governorship election cycle. The endorsement of Hamzat by a key figure like Obasa underscores the strategic moves being made to consolidate support within the party. As the 2027 elections approach, such endorsements are likely to shape the political landscape in Lagos State.
