The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State has ruled out any form of consensus candidacy for its upcoming primaries, insisting that all aspirants will contest through direct primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party Embraces Internal Democracy
In a statement released on Wednesday, the party explained that the decision aims to promote internal democracy and guarantee a free, fair, and transparent electoral process throughout the party's structure in the state. The state chairman, Otunba Femi Soluade, signed the statement, disclosing that arrangements for the primaries are already at an advanced stage, with electoral materials having arrived in the state.
The party confirmed that both sensitive and non-sensitive materials required for the exercise are already on ground, while modalities have been concluded to ensure a smooth process in all wards and local government areas. The forthcoming exercise will be conducted in line with the party's constitution and democratic best practices.
Factional Disputes Resolved
The ADC moved to dismiss speculations of internal divisions within its Ogun chapter, stating that all misunderstandings and disagreements among members have been amicably resolved. The party maintained that there is no faction or dichotomy within the party, adding that members are now united and focused on building a stronger political platform ahead of the next general elections.
The statement described the development as "a new dawn" for the party in Ogun State, expressing confidence that the direct primary system will deepen participation among party members. It further disclosed that the party is awaiting the arrival of an Electoral Committee from the party's National Secretariat to supervise and coordinate the primaries.
Security and Electoral Compliance
The party explained that the committee will ensure strict compliance with party guidelines and existing electoral regulations throughout the exercise. Relevant security agencies have been notified to ensure security and maintain law and order during the primaries. Among the agencies informed are the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security bodies expected to monitor the process.
The party announced that primaries for National Assembly, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly aspirants will be conducted consecutively in line with the approved timetable. The governorship primary election will be held afterward as scheduled by the party leadership.
Appeal for Peaceful Conduct
The ADC appealed to aspirants, party executives, delegates, youth groups, women groups, and supporters across the state to conduct themselves peacefully during the exercise. The party reaffirmed its commitment to promoting justice, fairness, credibility, and genuine democratic participation, while calling on members to remain united in pursuit of what it described as a greater Ogun State.
