The political landscape in Ekiti State has taken a fresh turn following the emergence of Dr. Olusegun Ayodele Osinkolu as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Ekiti North Senatorial District. Political observers view the development as a strategic realignment that could influence political dynamics ahead of the June 20 governorship election in the state.
Grassroots Support and Enthusiasm
Osinkolu’s emergence has reportedly sparked enthusiasm across the five local government areas in the district — Oye, Ikole, Moba, Ilejemeje and Ido-Osi — where supporters describe him as a grassroots politician with the experience and influence needed to provide effective representation. A businessman, philanthropist and grassroots mobiliser, Osinkolu recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, citing alleged lack of fairness, inclusiveness and internal justice within the ruling party.
His defection has continued to generate reactions across the state, especially among youths, women groups, artisans and community leaders, many of whom consider his entry into the PDP a major boost for the opposition party ahead of the governorship election. A native of Ayede-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area, Osinkolu is known for his involvement in scholarship schemes, empowerment programmes and community support initiatives targeted at vulnerable residents.
Political Implications for Oluyede
Political stakeholders believe his growing popularity and acceptance across party lines could significantly improve the electoral prospects of the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Oluwole Oluyede. Before joining the PDP, Osinkolu contested as the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) for the June 20 election, further underscoring his growing political relevance in the state.
His agenda for the senatorial district is said to focus on youth empowerment, employment creation, agriculture, healthcare, education, women development and attracting greater federal presence to the district. Beyond partisan politics, Osinkolu is also identified as one of the founding figures of the Ekiti Rainbow Coalition, a political movement made up of APC members and supporters from other political parties backing President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Support for Tinubu and Oluyede
The coalition has consistently expressed support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing his economic reforms as necessary steps toward national recovery and long-term economic stability. The group has also endorsed the governorship ambition of Dr. Oluwole Oluyede, insisting that both Oluyede and Tinubu represent progressive leadership capable of driving sustainable development and inclusive governance.
According to coalition members, the growing political collaboration between Tinubu supporters and the PDP structure in Ekiti reflects a shared commitment to political stability, peace and development-oriented leadership in the state. Supporters across Ekiti North say Osinkolu’s emergence signals a fresh opportunity for stronger representation, broader inclusion and accelerated development in the senatorial district.
