Oyo Speaker Declares APM as New Party Ahead of 2027 Election

In a significant political development, Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and a close ally of Governor Seyi Makinde, has declared the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as their new political platform. This announcement was made on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, during a strategic meeting in Ibadan.

Strategic Meeting with APM Candidate

Ogundoyin led a delegation of lawmakers to the Ibadan residence of Bimbo Adekanmbi, the APM's consensus governorship candidate. In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ogundoyin stated that the discussions focused on the future of Oyo State, party unity, progressive leadership, and the need to continue building on Governor Makinde's achievements.

He described the meeting as a fruitful engagement marked by sincerity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the progress of Oyo State. Ogundoyin emphasized the importance of placing the interest of the people above personal ambitions and strengthening democratic values and political structures.

Background of PDP Crisis

Both Ogundoyin and Makinde were previously members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has been embroiled in a crisis since 2022. The party is currently split into two factions: one backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, which is recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the authentic leadership, and another faction led by Kabiru Turaki.

Upcoming Unity Mega Rally

Governor Makinde is expected to formally declare his presidential ambition on Thursday, May 14, 2026, during a major political rally at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan. The event, tagged “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026,” will serve as the official launch of Makinde's anticipated 2027 presidential bid and the unveiling of a grand political alliance between the PDP and the APM.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that preparations for the rally have intensified amid growing political realignments within Oyo State and the wider south-west region.

PDP-APM Alliance Confirmed

In a related development, the PDP faction led by Kabiru Turaki has confirmed an alliance with the APM. Ini Ememobong, the spokesperson of the Turaki PDP faction, stated that the alliance stemmed from the All Opposition Political Party Leaders summit held in Ibadan in April 2026. He indicated that more alliances are expected to follow.

This political realignment marks a significant shift in Oyo State's political landscape, as Makinde and his loyalists seek to build a broad coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
