Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ogun State, has predicted that President Bola Tinubu will emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election, with Atiku Abubakar as the closest contender and Peter Obi not being a significant factor. Sowunmi made this projection during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
Sowunmi's Analysis of the 2027 Race
Sowunmi stated: "From an analytical point of view, the person most likely to come close to President Tinubu in the 2027 election is Atiku; Peter Obi is not in it at all." He based his assessment on current political dynamics and the strength of the candidates' support bases.
Recall that in the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu defeated Atiku and Obi. Atiku ran under the PDP banner, while Obi contested on the Labour Party platform. Tinubu represented the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Party Shifts for 2027
For the 2027 elections, both Obi and Atiku have switched parties. Obi is now the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while Atiku is running under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Sowunmi, who served as spokesperson for Atiku's campaign council in the 2019 and 2023 elections, expressed skepticism about their chances.
Despite his past role, Sowunmi did not see either candidate winning in 2027. His comments have sparked reactions from Nigerians online.
Public Reactions to the Prediction
Abiodun Owolabi criticized the opposition's failure to unite against the APC: "Called the whole plan and strategy in 2023. How opposition did not galvanise to close those gaps, combine powers and make inroads where it mattered most is still beyond me. The election is done and dusted to be honest, and it hurts that it isn’t going to be as competitive as I wished."
Bimpe Babbs remarked that Obi's supporters are upset by Sowunmi's analysis: "The obidients are mad because of the brilliant analysis from Segun Showumi. They are allergic to the truth, and they are bubble dwellers."
Daishkawa disagreed with Sowunmi, citing the youth vote: "He is discountenancing the young voters demographic and over-reliance on the rigging plan of Atiku and Tinubu... But the young demographic can still win the election for Peter Obi again..... The movements can easily win if they come together, Kwankwasiyya + Ratles + Obidient + 18yrs."
Ray also rejected the prediction: "We heard and read similar rhetoric in 2023. Nigerians' support for the OK ticket is unreserved and unshaken. This is just a cheap psychological manipulation aimed at deterring OK teaming supporters."
Background of the Key Figures
President Bola Tinubu, the APC candidate, won the 2023 election. Atiku Abubakar, who contested under the PDP in 2023, is now with the ADC. Peter Obi, formerly of the Labour Party, is now the NDC candidate. Sowunmi's projection has added to the ongoing debate about the 2027 election outcome.
