PDP Suspends Governorship Candidate Ladi Hassan in Kwara

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Magaji Ngeri Ward, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, has suspended one of its two nominated governorship candidates, Ladi Hassan. The ward executive committee accused Mr. Hassan of engaging in anti-party activities and gross misconduct.

Background of the Suspension

Premium Times previously reported that Mr. Hassan was announced as the governorship candidate by the Tanimu Turaki faction of the PDP on Sunday. This announcement came just days after the state chapter of the party, which aligns with the Nyesom Wike-led faction, nominated Suleiman Kawu for the same position under a consensus arrangement brokered by former Governor Bukola Saraki.

The Suspension Letter

In a suspension letter dated June 2, signed by ward chairman Aliyu Kolawole, ward secretary, and chairman of the disciplinary committee Taofeek Jimba, the party accused Mr. Hassan of actions contrary to the party's constitution and code of conduct. The letter stated that the ward executive committee had previously issued a query on May 30, detailing allegations of anti-party activities and directing him to appear before a seven-member disciplinary committee within 48 hours.

The ward leadership noted that Mr. Hassan acknowledged receipt of the correspondence but failed to honor the invitation, which they considered an admission of guilt. The letter read: "As stated in the said letter, you were directed to appear before a seven-man committee set up by the Ward Executive Committee within 48 hours of receipt. Your failure to comply constitutes an admission of guilt of anti-party activities, acts of indiscipline, and gross misconduct."

Citing Sections 57 and 59(1) of the party's constitution, the committee announced a one-month suspension from all party activities with immediate effect. This sanction bars Mr. Hassan from participating in meetings, programs, and activities at ward, local government, state, and national levels. The committee also warned that non-compliance could lead to further disciplinary actions under the PDP constitution.

Political Context

Political observers note that this development occurs within ongoing realignments in the Kwara PDP after the party's last governorship primary election. Mr. Hassan had reportedly signed a consensus agreement among aspirants that produced Mr. Kawu.

Response from Ladi Hassan

When contacted, Mr. Hassan dismissed the suspension as laughable, stating: "How can you suspend someone that does not belong to your group?" He indicated that he would address the media at an appropriate time to brief Nigerians on the entire scenario.
