Peter Obi Hints 2031 Presidential Run Unlikely Due to Zoning and Age
Peter Obi Says 2031 Presidential Run Unlikely Over Zoning, Age

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has stated that his chances of contesting the 2031 presidential election are very slim, primarily due to Nigeria's informal zoning arrangement and his age. Obi made the remarks during an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, where he addressed his political future beyond the 2027 elections.

Zoning and Age as Deciding Factors

Obi explained that if the presidency shifts to the North in 2031 under the unwritten power-rotation convention, it would be unlikely to return to the South until he is 78 years old. 'I said because if I don't run now, by the next time it comes, believing in the zoning formula, it will go to the North,' Obi said. 'If it goes North in 2031, by the time it comes again to the South, I will be 78 years old, and I don't think I would be doing this at that age.'

The former Anambra State governor noted that his next move would depend on the outcome of the 2027 election and the zoning of the presidency for the 2031 cycle. 'I don't know until after the outcome of the 2027 election,' he told Oseni.

Narrow Scenario for Reconsideration

Obi acknowledged a narrow scenario in which he might reconsider a 2031 run: if the presidency remained in the South through the next election. However, he quickly downplayed that prospect. 'If it's still in the South in the next election, maybe, but the probability is very slim,' Obi said. He added that his reluctance to state his position more firmly stemmed from concern about how it might be interpreted. 'I don't want to say it because people might think that I'm saying it because of some people,' he said.

Clearest Signal Yet

The comments mark one of the clearest signals from the 2023 presidential runner-up that 2027 represents his most realistic window for a shot at the nation's highest office. Obi, who came third in the 2023 election, has been a prominent opposition figure, but his age and the zoning convention appear to be limiting his long-term ambitions.

Umahi Accuses Obi of Avoiding Debate

In related news, Minister of Works David Umahi has publicly accused Obi of avoiding a governance debate. Umahi claimed that Obi avoided him because he knew his record as a former governor could not survive direct scrutiny. The accusation adds to the political tension surrounding Obi's candidacy and his decision to limit his future electoral prospects.
