Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, formally declared his intention to seek a fifth term in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday. The declaration ceremony took place at the Mallawa Eid Ground in Zaria, drawing a large crowd of supporters who participated in a solidarity walk through major parts of the city before converging at the venue.
Record of Performance
Abbas, who has represented Zaria Federal Constituency since 2011, based his re-election decision on his record of performance, impactful representation, and commitment to constituency development. He stated: "Today, I formally declare my intention to seek another mandate to represent the good people of Zaria Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. This declaration is not based on promises alone. It is based on work. It is based on results."
He emphasized that 2027 is not a time for uncertainty or experiments, but rather for consolidating the progress made together. Abbas highlighted the need for more opportunities for youth, stronger support for traders, improved security and infrastructure for farmers, continued investment in schools, and sustained development for communities.
Constituency Projects and Empowerment
The Speaker detailed several constituency projects and empowerment programmes facilitated during his tenure, including distribution of vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, agricultural inputs, and financial support. Over 2,400 beneficiaries received direct financial support, while thousands of students benefited from scholarship programmes valued at approximately N5 billion. He also cited the Education City project in Zaria, worth about N80 billion, aimed at improving access to education and boosting development in Northern Nigeria.
In healthcare, Abbas noted that several primary healthcare centres were facilitated across communities, and a newly completed 100-bed Specialist Hospital was recently commissioned in the constituency.
Legislative Achievements
Before becoming Speaker, Abbas sponsored 74 bills, 21 of which were signed into law. Under the leadership of the 10th House of Representatives, over 2,000 bills have been introduced and considered, with more than 180 passed and over 50 signed into law.
Abbas commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for courageous leadership and commitment to reforms aimed at repositioning the country. He said: "Leadership is not always about easy decisions. Sometimes it requires sacrifice, patience, and the courage to take responsibility for the future. President Tinubu has shown that courage."
He also praised Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for promoting peace, stability, and development in the state. Abbas thanked the APC leadership at all levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths, and supporters across the constituency for their continued support. He urged constituents to support his re-election bid, emphasizing that continuity in leadership is necessary to sustain ongoing development projects and attract more opportunities.
