Tinubu Urges Unity as APC Primaries Begin: 'Not Do-or-Die'

President Bola Tinubu has called for unity, discipline, and sportsmanship as the All Progressives Congress (APC) begins its primary elections across Nigeria for the 2026/2027 election cycle. In a nationwide message, Tinubu emphasized that the primaries are a crucial test of the party's cohesion and warned against bitterness and internal divisions.

APC Primaries as a Test of Unity and Strength

Tinubu stated that the APC was founded on progressive ideals, consensus building, and selfless leadership. He stressed that the ongoing primaries should reinforce these values rather than weaken them. The exercise begins with House of Representatives primaries and will culminate in the presidential primary on May 25, 2026. Tinubu described the primaries as a "referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party."

Consensus, Fairness, and Internal Democracy

The President acknowledged efforts to reach consensus candidates, calling it a positive step to reduce internal conflict. However, he emphasized that where consensus fails, members must embrace open competition conducted in peace and mutual respect. "Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters," he said.

Warning Against Toxic Rivalry

Tinubu cautioned aspirants and stakeholders against toxic rivalry, urging both winners and losers to act with maturity. He stressed that politics should not be a zero-sum contest and that unity after primaries is critical for electoral success. "We should not play the politics of old; the do-or-die politics that we have put behind us. Politics should never be a zero-sum game," he stated.

Call for Fairness and Inclusion

The President urged party leaders to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all aspirants, insisting on transparent and credible internal processes. He specifically called for greater inclusion of women and young people, describing them as essential to the party's future growth. Tinubu also advised security agencies to remain neutral and professional, limiting their role to maintaining peace and order.

He concluded by wishing all aspirants success and expressing confidence in the party's ability to emerge stronger from the process.

APC Confident of Victory in 2027

Earlier, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda expressed confidence in the party's readiness for the 2027 elections. He stated that no force can stop the APC from winning presidential, governorship, and other seats, describing President Tinubu's administration as superb.
