Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, renewed his membership with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday at Giginyu Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area, signaling his full return to the party. He was accompanied by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, State Chairman Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa, and top party officials, as hundreds of supporters gathered to welcome him. Shekarau officially registered and received his APC membership card.
Governor Yusuf Welcomes Shekarau
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf described Shekarau as a respected elder statesman whose contributions to governance and public service remain remarkable. He added that Shekarau’s political experience and influence would strengthen the APC’s chances in future elections. “We are here today to receive our grandfather, father and leader, a former governor and former permanent secretary in Kano. His credibility during his years in the civil service is well acknowledged,” the governor said.
“In the history of the civil service in Kano, you must mention Malam Ibrahim Shekarau. He also served as a minister in one of the biggest ministries. With his return, we are confident that 2027 elections will be a victory in Kano and beyond, God willing,” Yusuf stated. The governor further expressed optimism that more political heavyweights would join the party in the coming days. “I am confident that with the calibre of people coming with Shekarau, we will witness more positive changes. Almost all the big names in Kano politics who desire development are now aligning with the APC because they believe it is the party that can deliver,” he added.
Shekarau Pledges Commitment
On his part, Shekarau said the occasion marked a historic moment and pledged his commitment to the party’s growth and success. The former governor noted that he played a foundational role in the formation of the party. “We thank God for witnessing this historic day. We want to assure all leaders and stakeholders in APC that we will do the needful,” he said.
“The history of APC cannot be complete without us. We were part of those who gave birth to it and nurtured it. Along the line, some people came in and destabilised things, but we are back now that stability is being restored,” he said. Shekarau also assured party members that efforts would be intensified to expand the party’s grassroots support base. He assured that he will lead APC campaign trail to the nooks and crannies of the state to ensure the success of the party in next year’s election.
Party Chairman Commends Return
State Chairman Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa applauded the former governor for advocating equal opportunity and a level playing field for all members irrespective of identity or affiliation. Doguwa maintained that APC gladly welcomes the return of Shekarau and former Senator representing Kano North Senatorial District, Sen. Bello Ayatullah Gwarzo, and assured an open-door policy under his leadership.
