The government of Bauchi state announced with deep sorrow on Monday morning, November 24, the passing of Brigadier-General (Rtd) Abu Ali, who once served as the state's military administrator.
A Leader Remembered: Governor Bala Mohammed's Tribute
In an official statement released by Mukhtar Gidado, the media and publicity adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed, the governor conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the departed general, with particular mention of his children and the people of Bassa Nge Kingdom in Kogi state.
The statement expressed that Governor Bala Mohammed, acting on behalf of his own family, the state government, and all citizens of Bauchi, mourns the loss with profound sadness and a heavy heart.
A Tenure of Development and Decisive Leadership
Brigadier-General Abu Ali's service as the military administrator of Bauchi state spanned from September 1990 to January 1992 during the era of General Ibrahim Babangida. His time in office is remembered for significant developmental projects and a strong commitment to public welfare.
Among his notable achievements were:
- The commissioning of the Bauchi Township Water Project, a critical infrastructure development for the state capital's residents.
- Playing a central role in strengthening the Tomato Processing Company, thereby boosting the local agricultural industry.
- The founding of the Wikki Tourists Football Club, an institution that has become a point of state pride.
Beyond economic and infrastructure development, General Ali demonstrated firm leadership during crises. In 1991, when ethno-religious conflicts erupted in Tafawa Balewa and surrounding areas, he took decisive action by imposing a curfew and deploying security forces. His balanced and thoughtful approach was instrumental in restoring stability and preventing further violence.

The governor's tribute also highlighted General Ali's peaceful handover to a democratically elected government in January 1992, an act that showed his respect for democratic processes.
Following his military career, Abu Ali continued his dedication to service by ascending to the role of Etsu Bassa Nge, a first-class traditional ruler in Kogi State, a position he held since the year 2000. In this capacity, he was widely respected for his wisdom, cultural pride, and leadership.
