The Nsukka Patriotic Group (NPG) has called for an unreserved public apology from Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah regarding the demolition of Ogige Main Market in Nsukka. The group claims this action has resulted in severe economic hardship for thousands of families in the Enugu North Senatorial District.
This demand was outlined in a communique issued after a group meeting and circulated in Enugu on Friday. Approximately 5,000 shops were demolished two years ago to make way for a state government ultra-modern motor park.
Governor's Defense
During an endorsement rally for his second term, organized by the Enugu North Senatorial Zone last Saturday, Governor Mbah explained that the demolition was in the best interest of the state. He described the market as a 'keg of gunpowder' and noted that without action, an emergency situation could have arisen, hindering intervention efforts. He promised seed money and new shop allocations for the affected traders.
Group's Condemnation
The NPG, however, condemned the demolition as 'reckless and insensitive' and urged residents to resist any planned solidarity rally for the governor. 'We call on all true sons and daughters of Enugu North who feel the pain of our people over the demolished Ogige Market to shun any planned solidarity rally for the Governor. Any participant will be regarded as an accomplice to this abomination against our people,' the communique stated.
The group further asserted that any endorsement of the governor does not represent the collective will of Enugu North people, but rather the handiwork of a few individuals pursuing personal interests. They claimed that after three years in office, the administration has not constructed a single road or delivered any functional project in the zone.
'The NPG is closely monitoring individuals and groups who are cheaply selling out the zone for personal gain,' the group added, warning that such individuals would be exposed and dealt with accordingly.
